2024 Dates - May

Fliss Owen

We are delighted that Fliss is returning to run another demo and workshop for us.
Some words from Fliss about the day:
“I can apply this monochromatic demo to subjects in pretty much any medium (and will bring other examples of my own work including recent oils in colour which required an initial "grisaille" underpainting in monochrome. We will be concentrating mainly on Tonal Values so I will probably demo this time in charcoal with the addition of chalk, ink and paint if necessary. I will briefly recap on proportions of face, etc, how to draw eyes correctly and get the "life" into them and how best to illuminate the subject to achieve a good reference picture. Because I am a bit of a stickler for correct drawing, I will also demonstrate my simple (cheats) method to start a portrait as bad drawing creates bad painting!

Student Requirements

  1. a good high contrast GREYSCALE photograph of their chosen subject which clearly shows facial features - eyes, nose, mouth, shape of face, ears, hair/fur, etc. We will also use this as a tracing so please print to finished size required on white copy paper.

  2. a soft pencil 4B-8B

  3. all materials required for your chosen medium in Monochrome. I recommend no larger than A3 size for the time we have available.
